The Transformation of European Urban Space

A good city is imagined by many to be an integrated collection of well-defined areas, with clear functions and territorial boundaries. In practice, however, these territorial boundaries are subject to complexity, porosity, conflict and change, especially when cities are undergoing major transformation. Drawing on examples from European cities, this presentation will investigate the relations between territoriality, socio-economic change, and urban space. What are the imperatives that drive the creation and transformation of boundaries, what kinds of spaces do they define, and what sorts of social relations do they signify?
